The Times They Are Changing.

Income

When we married, our combined income (3 jobs) was less than $350 a month. Still we saved money, Barnett took flying lessons and Maryn went to college classes. Not sure how we managed that but glad we did.

A woman's income did not count for loans

ML's income was not considered by the bank for getting a loans for our first home. because 'she could get pregnant and not work'. Of course, it was not much in terms of $ but it was insulting that the banks did not even count it.

Household Expenses

A gallon of milk was about $1.10.
Disposable diapers were a luxury we could not afford.  The GI Bill made it possible for Barnett to get his college degree. Our rent was $135 a month in NO and $160 in Nashville and today it rents for $1650.

Could of, should of... listened to our heads as well as our hearts.

Opportunities missed:
  • Could have bought $600 of HCA stock while Mary Lynn worked there - If we had and held it, it would be worth about a million now.
  • Could have bought Berkshire Hathaway stock when first started working there and at the time it was $1,283 a share...today its about $314,000.
  • Should have invested in bitcoin when Maryn wanted to in spite of financial advisors advice. It was about $1 a share.  Today it is over $12,000.
  • Should have taken more vacations with our kids when they were young.
