Far from Perfect Start

My parents drove to New Orleans with a little Uhaul trailer that had a bed and a table to furnish our apartment, and they stocked the kitchen, buying necessities like a broom.

Fortunately, Barnett got to eat at the commissary on the base or he might have starved with my cooking skills. We had no phone. I walked to the payphone 3 blocks away to call mom and dad, collect, once a week.

We had the one car. He had to drive the car 21 miles to the base in one direction while I had an adventure each day the other direction. I walked a mile to the bus stop, took the bus to the ferry, took the ferry across the river, walked 4 blocks to the streetcar, rode 3 miles and then walked to the hospital where I worked for $1.27 an hour.

We learned to depend on one another. We learned to appreciate our differences.

An Ocean Between Us

Our differences sometimes still causes problems. A perfect example of our diverse interests is that we tried  for a long time to plan a big party to celebrate our 50 years together. But those of you who know us will not be surprised to learn that we could not agree on how to celebrate.....

At first, we wanted a big party with all the trimmings, but when sticker shock hit us, we had to regroup.

I wanted a smaller, elegant dinner with close family and friends at a 5 Star Restaurant. (You would have loved it!)

He wanted a party in the park, invite everyone he knew, and serve Chick-Fil-A box lunches.
I think that qualifies as a “moving sea between our shores.”

After months of arguing over this, we called our daughter, a professional event planner, to help us make a decision. After 3 hours with us, she closed her notebook, stood up, and said, “I think you should stop trying to do this together and each have your own party.”
